About this work
Three tall wooden totem poles carved with faces rise behind a low log fence under a large, glowing full moon. In front of the fence, a tight pack of wolves presses together, their dark bodies filling the lower third of the composition; only one wolf, lit in warm orange, turns its head to look directly out of the picture while the rest remain in shadow.
The sky is painted in a deep burnt-orange gradient that pales toward the glowing moon, contrasting with the cool blue-black of the totems and wolves. Textured, hatched strokes build the fur and weathered wood, and the warm-cool color division combined with the wolves' watching eyes gives the scene a hushed, watchful, slightly ominous mood.
